I absolutely love all forms of light, whether it be enjoying natural sunlight, or lighting in the home. Since I already have the Philips Hue bulb system, I was attracted to the idea of reviewing another Bluetooth controlled lighting system.  Meet Elgato’s Avea Flare; A portable mood light that can be controlled with an iOS or Android device. Let’s take a look!avea-flare-review-01

In the box you will see the Avea Flare, wireless charging base with plug, and instruction booklet.

The first thing I noticed about the Avea Flare is the odd “egg” shape.  It’s very lightweight plastic, with a silver bar on the bottom of the base so that you can hang it up. avea-flare-review-04

I can see this come in handy if you want to hang it from the ceiling in the corner of a room.

You can also see the wireless charging contacts, along with the power button and mode” button, that allows you to try a demo (all colors alternating).  If you want to get out of the demo, you then connect your phone to the light.

Technical specifications for the Avea Flare are:

  • 8.7in in height
  • built-in battery lasts over 8 hours
  • Built in LED: 60lm
  • IP65 water resistant
  • Apple device with iOS 9 or later
  • Android device with Android 5.0 or later

It’s very straightforward to connect the Avea Flare mood light. Download the Avea app from the iOS App Store and hold the phone next to the light once powered on. Once connected, the app displays a list of predefined light settings that you can choose from.

My favorites tend to be the cooler blue tones, such as Northern Glow and Mountain Breeze.

Here’s a warm color called Oozy Flames that variates between oranges and reds. You can adjust the brightness and vividness of the light via the app.

In the app there are some pre-sets where you can set a schedule and sound to wake up to the light color that you choose, along with a sound that plays from your phone. This is a nice way to set the mood for a bedroom when waking up and going to bed.

Although a simple product, I really enjoy using the Avea Flare as it’s very portable. I love that I can put it in any room inside or outside the house, and control what colors I want to display for the mood that I’m in. The egg shape is a bit odd, but the battery life is great if using it off the wireless charging base. I would say I got a good eight to nine hours of continuous use.  Re-charging the battery is super easy by sitting it on top of the base.
