SanDisk iXpand

Flash storage for your “i” devices can be hard to come by even though the iPhone and iPad have been around for years now. Recently I had a chance to review the PhotoFast Max Extreme, a 64 GB flash drive with USB and Lightning connections and it works great, but it is always neat to see what else is out there. The iXpand flash drive from SanDisk is SanDisk’s entry into the wide open “i” device external storage arena. The iXpand comes in 16, 32, 64, and 128 GB models. Along with the SanDisk iXpand sync app, the iXpand allows you to seamlessly backup your photos, videos and files. Having a flexible Lightning connector helps protect it from mishaps. The iXpand only has a USB 2.0 connector, but it should be powerful enough to get the job done. The iXpand also sports a rechargeable internal Li-ion battery to power the unit for faster transfers. The SanDisk iXpand 64GB models cost $199.99 from the SanDisk website, that’s about $70 cheaper then the Max Extreme.

  2. That seems rather expensive for a specialized device. In contrast their Wireless Connect stick is only $50 for the 64GB version, uses WiFi, is cross-platform, and can serve up to 3 devices simultaneously. I loaded up one with gigabytes of Daniel Tiger cartoon episodes last year (12 hour flight), and it provided entertainment to a bored toddler on a 12 hour flight.

    1. Fazal,

I’m confused about how a wireless WiFi device would work.

If I’m on a plane, where there is no WiFi, how does my iPad connect to the storage device?

Meanwhile, even if I use this plug in device, how would I access the movies or audios or other things if they’re not on my iPad and visible to Videos or iTunes or my Audible app?
