Jackery - 1

I know of almost no one worth his or her Gadgeteer lifetime membership badge who doesn’t have some sort of power backup for their smartphone and/or tablet. This category has exploded, along with the move from cheaper, low-quality batteries to safer, more robust, and highly focused battery packs. Jackery, Inc. has recently introduced a range of various sizes and shapes for this market – oddly, just in time for end-of-year holiday gifting. If you’re looking for something to take to the annual Festivus Feats of Strength, or just the thing to give to your beloved during your Yule Log burning, there’s something here for all budgets and use cases.
The external packs, which I am covering here, are all similar in that they are brushed seamless metal cases with a flat plastic bottom and a matching top with all the ports. There is a wide range of color options, different for each size, as well as different numbers of ports and capacities.

Like the bears of story book fame, I was sent the Jackery batteries in three sizes. The baby bear is called, appropriately enough, the Jackery Mini. With 3200 mAh capacity and about 4 hours charging time, the single 5V/1A output port will power your less-power-hungry devices for twice their usual battery life. Once you get to an iPhone 6 or a Samsung Note, that shrinks to maybe a 50% increase. At 2.7 ounces and 3.7x.9x.8 inch, however, it’s going to take very little space for that large an increase in your runtime.

Top to bottom in the photo above, are the Mini, the Pop, and the Fit. That’s a fifth generation iPod touch for size comparison.
The Pop is the midrange I was sent. (Now you know where my silly Three Bears analogy came from!) It’s a 5200 mAh battery with two USB 5V/2.4A output ports. This model is only available in orange, but at 3.8″ x 1.8″ x 0.9″ it’s sized nicely for slipping into a pocket to give you two more complete charges on your iPhone 6s.

The last is the largest I was sent, the Jackery Fit. With a 10,200 mAh capacity, you’re looking at about 8 hours of charge time through either of the two 5V/2.4A outputs. Available in Gold, Silver, and a “Space Grey” looking charcoal, this model also has a flashlight, activated by double-clicking the side button. While it’s not going to help you land planes on an aircraft carrier flight deck, it will easily help you scope out the depths of your gear bag, or the further reaches of chaos under a car seat. At 3.9×2.5x.8 inches, it’s barely the size of a deck of cards or a pack of smokes.

In my tests, each of the units was well-made, nicely packaged, and performed as expected. They charged easily, and reliably charged any devices I connected, from phones to speakers to flashlights. They each have their own power level LEDs, as well, activated by a single push of the power button. With holiday gifting season in process, many of our family members may benefit from a gift of spare power. The Jackery, with their wide range and attention to quality and detail, may have something that would fill the bill – and their gadgets’ power tanks.
