Do you include a pen as part of your EDC (every day carry)? I have a couple full sized pens in my gear bag, but I don’t typically carry a small pen in my pocket for those times when I’m walking around at work and need to write something. Since I’m currently obsessed with pens, I thought it might be fun to review the Move mini bolt-action EDC pen. Let’s take a look and see if it’s worth a spot in your pocket or on your keychain.

At only 3.25 inches long, the Move pen is definitely small. As you can see from the image above, it’s about half the length of a Bic stick pen.

Available in hard anodized aluminum and titanium, I was sent an aluminum version with a brushed metallic silver finish. The Move is also available with a polished or a dark grey finish.

The Move has a barrel that goes from narrow at the top end, to wider at the opposite end. It has an integrated attachment loop that can be used to attach the included split ring for your keyring or a carabiner. The Move pen also has a spring loaded bolt action mechanism that is used to extend and retract the refill tip.

I’ve recently reviewed a couple other bolt action pens and I would have to say that the Move has the stiffest mechanism of the ones I’ve tried so far. It takes some strength to move the bolt with the pad of your thumb. I find it easier to extend the pen tip than retract it, but it’s only slightly easier.

move-pen-5

The Move mini bolt action pen uses the Lamy M22 refill. Replacing the refill requires that you unscrew the end of the pen. That end is small and also has an O-ring which makes it hard to unscrew it and get it fully screwed back on.

The Move pen is short but not so short that it feels too awkward to write with. You have to remember that this is an EDC pen. This isn’t a pen that you’re going to use all day long. That said, I think the pen would benefit from some knurling on the grip because it is pretty slippery. It’s a cool little pen that is well made and rugged enough to stand the test of time. But the stiff bolt action mechanism and the price keep me from really loving it (although shipping is included in the price). If you have strong thumbs and a flush wallet, the Move mini bolt-action EDC pen might become your next favorite. Let me know if it does.
