This cast iron candle holder called Moment was designed by Norwegian designer Lars Beller Fjetland according to Dezeen. It is an amazingly simple design that uses a movable pendulum attached to an arm with a cupped extinguisher. The pendulum’s needle-like tip is inserted into the side of a candle such that when the wick burns and melts away the candle wax, gravity takes over causing the point of the pendulum to fall. As the pendulum falls, the arm with the cupped end swings over the top of the candle to extinguish the flame. The video shows the ingenuity of this simple device:

This candle holder made its debut at Maison&Objet trade fair in Paris this year, but there has been no announcement about when or where it will be available for sale.

  2. I have a feeling I’ve seen a vintage 18 hundreds version of this. However quick Google search says I haven’t. Hmmm either way cool idea, however I’ll stick to my LED’s for now.

      1. You both may be correct. According to the designer, he was inspired by a 19th-century candelabra that he saw in an Oslo museum. Whether or not Moment is a replica or a modification, I can’t say since there was no reference pointing to it. Fascinating though, eh?

  3. Considering it’s made from cast iron, why not just let the candle burn all the way down? Cast iron is a very poor heat conductor, so it will not set fire to the table under it. Sorry for being practical and killing the gadget factor 😉

    1. My experience when burning candles all the way down is that they drip wax all over the candle holder. This might prevent a lot of that mess. Maybe, maybe not. I still like the Moment candle holder 🙂
