There are a variety of device mounting solutions for vehicles including dash mounts, cup holder mounts, vent mounts, windshield mounts and more. I’m really picky when it comes to which ones I want to use in my car, because I will not use adhesives, I don’t want to drill holes, I’m not a fan of suction cups that can detach at random moments and I don’t like anything that gets in the way of my driving. The Koomus CD-Slot Smartphone Car Mount has none of those problems, so let’s take a look.

The is what I would describe as a minimalist mounting solution. It’s been designed to work with most CD players and smartphones or other devices that are from 2.25 up to 3.4 inches wide.

The device holder features an expanding spring-loaded jaw that is wrapped in silicone for grip and protection. The holder is attached to the CD clip by a ball joint that will allow the holder to rotate a full 360 degrees and tilt for the best viewing angle.

A very strong spring-loaded wedge is used to hold the Koomus mount securely in your vehicle’s CD slot.

I tested the Koomus CD-Slot mount with my LG G3 Android smartphone. I found that the jaws that hold the device are not very deep. One time during my testing, my phone popped out of the holder and fell into the floor boards as I was driving. After that, I made sure to pay attention to how I was putting it in the holder so that it would be seated as flat as possible. Since then, I’ve not had any problems, but I think the jaws could stand to be .25 inches deeper.

Here’s a view that shows how the holder expands to hold wider devices like my LG G3.

The only difficulty I had with installing the holder in the CD slot of my MINI Cooper was pinching the wedge closed enough to slide it in the CD slot. If you have weak hands, you might have some problems doing it by yourself.

I slid the holder over to the right as far as I could, to make sure it would not be in the way of my gear shift or controls. Of course, all cars are designed differently, so keep that in mind.

Once installed, it is relatively easy to mount your device with one hand by pressing the device edge against the side of the holder that expands and then pivoting the other side of the device to engage with the opposite side of the holder.

The holder can easily rotate 360 degrees and slightly pivot left, right, up and down to adjust the viewing angle.

The Koomus CD-Slot Smartphone Car Mount is a well-made device mount that installs easily and takes up very little space in your vehicle. It works well as long as you have a thin device and pay attention to how you seat that device in the hold’s spring loaded jaws.

  2. Would you happen to know whether you could fit 2 holders side by side in the same CD slot? My wife and I both need phone mounts for our car. Thanks!

    1. I think it might work, but why would you want to? In portrait orientation you wouldn’t be able to hold devices that are very wide because the holders would bump against each other when they were extended.

  3. It’s a cool idea. I keep this in my travel bag

(fits Note4 fine, but not Note 3)

for when I umm well travel. My company requires I rent cars for travel, I’ve yet to get a rental without a CD player. I have however gotten many with airvents or dashes that are not practice for mounts.

  4. Wonderful unit, in fact I won this in the last give-away. They called, we had a great conversation and showed they have great customer service. It arrived in two days and was the first of 12, waiting on the other 11.

    It feels like Christmas!

Excellent device and so are the others for your desk.

    Thank you!!!

  5. Hi Julie,

I have the same year Mini Cooper (but not an S, sadly). I love previewing what tech will look like in my car by looking at your pictures!

I recently read the review you did for the Iomount Pro in your car. They both look pretty practical.

Do you prefer the Iomount or the Koomus?

I’m trying to make a purchasing decision.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

    E
