One of the things taught in women’s self-defense classes is to put your keys between your fingers and use them as a stabbing tool if you are ever attacked.  If you fix your keys between your fingers before you ever open that door, you’ll be ready, but it’s not always so quickly done if you are caught unaware.  If you had Brutus the Bull Dog Self Defense Keychain with your keys, you could slip it on your fingers as easily and quickly as slipping on a ring.  Brutus looks like a large (3.5″ X 2.5″) key fob, but it’s made of impact-resistant molded plastic that’s as strong as metal.  You’ll need to check your local regulations about what self-defense items you can carry before buying.  You won’t be able to carry this on a plane, of course, but it might make you feel a little safer walking to your car or the bus stop at night.  One Amazon seller has Brutus the Bull Dog Self Defense Keychain in black for $2.60; other sellers offer other colors at various price points.

  2. Sorry I missed this bit of the review I was distracted by the impressive picture of Brutus !

  3. A combination lock could never be questioned by authorities. If used like a single metal knuckle it has the added advantage of being separate from your keys.

That old key between fingers defense idea could now be considered urban legend. It must be from the 1940s when a little scratch on the face -might- have deterred a petty thief.

Preparation and mindset are critical. Any of these close range options will seldom be effective with one blow. One should use the strongest possible legal weapon that circumstances allow. Practice and be ready.
