Back in May of this year, Google had announced the end of support for XMPP based calling with Google voice. With a Google voice account and an OBi device you can make and receive VoIP calls on a regular telephone, call internationally at low rates, and use premium features included free such as voicemail, call waiting, telemarketer blocking, and caller ID.
Today on the Obhai blog, they have announced that there is finally official support for Google Voice! This is great news for users who want the convenience to use their Google voice number with a regular phone line. Does this mean that Google will (officially) continue to support xmpp?
Nice – thanks for the heads-up! I was about to go with the GV talk dongle but my only Windows PC is a tiny old Asus EEE running XP, so I wasn’t optimistic. But for $29 this is the same price and doesn’t need to be connected to a PC.
I have had (and loved) the Obi100 with the wonderful free Google Voice for a while now. When the date of the Google Voice support was supposed to die finally arrived this past May, I went and bought the GV talk USB dongle. Hated it. It worked poorly. I discarded it.
I plugged the Obi100 back in just as a desperate test and to my surprise the Google Voice support had not died, as it was supposed to have.
So, I just kept using the Obi100 thinking use it till Google finally pulls the plug.
Well, good news indeed. Obi says Google will not be pulling the plug after all. I highly recommend the Obi100 stand-alone device, and the free Google Voice service.
When the first ObiHai ATAs launched, we had a good laugh about them being ideally suited for use with Google’s voice services.
Perhaps Google should ‘assimilate’ ObiHai and distribute millions of centrally managed ObiHai devices throughout the world?
