The next time I go camping will be never, but if you love that activity, the Buck Knives 941 Travelmate kit is a nifty addition you should consider adding to your camping kitchen gear. It packs a knife, fork and other tools in a convenient sheath that even prevents the spread of bacteria. Let’s take a closer look.

The Travelmate Kit consists of a knife and a multi-function fork that is stored in a glass reinforced nylon sheath that contains an antimicrobial additive that prevents the spread of bacteria.

The sheath has a snap in latch that holds the knife inside and a clip for the multi-function fork that snaps to the outside. The design of the sheath is clever, but it is missing one important feature – a belt clip.

The knife has a 4 7/8″ (12.4 cm) long blade with a satin finish and a serrated edge. The blade is made of 410HC steel which is both wear and corrosion resistant. The handle is made of a dark brown material called PaperStone. I’d never heard of this material, but came to learn that it’s made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper, making it extremely eco-friendly. The handle is strong and dishwasher safe. Even the sheath is dishwasher safe.

The blade is wide and slightly flexible, making it perfect for cutting bread and spreading butter, and spreads.

The multi-function fork has fork tines on one end along with two sizes of grill scrapers on the side. On the opposite end there’s a bottle opener, can opener and a screwdriver. The only utensil missing from the kit is a spoon…

I tested the knife on some indoor cooking tasks like cutting rolls for sandwiches, slicing tomatoes, spreading mayo on sandwiches and more. The blade is even wide enough to be used as a pseudo spatula. The knife is comfortable to use, has a sharp blade and worked great at any task I used it for.

The Buck Knives 941 Travelmate Kit is well made and useful for outdoor (and indoor) cooking activities. The price is steep at $77 through Buck Knives own site, but I found it for $48 through Amazon, which is still pricey, but keep in mind that the kit has a forever warranty from the manufacture. This kit is ideal for campers and outdoor enthusiasts who need a minimal set of cooking tools.

  2. That was an interesting. I camp all the time (travel trailer) and would never use it either but I think it is made more for backpacking. Thanks for the review!

  3. Hi Julie,

The Amazon link you gave is only for the sheath at $23. The kit itself goes for about $48, which is still a discount.

    Thanks
