I just finished reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed, a book about a woman who hiked the PCT (Pacific Coast Trail) all by herself. It made me wish I could do something like that. But the problem is that my idea of camping is sitting on my front porch in my pajamas while surfing my favorite gadget sites and drinking a cup of tea. If you’re more outdoorsy than I am, you might want to look into buying a VSSL Supplies survival kit for your next outdoor adventure. The VSSL kit consists of an 8 x 2 inch diameter anodized aluminum tube that holds individual tins of supplies like an LED flashlight, oil filled compass, beeswax candle, razor blade, water purification tablets, fishing kit, saw, whistle, fire starter, signal mirror and more. This kit will be priced at $89 when it becomes available this fall from VSSL.

  2. If VSSL is reading this, they should consider something like this for urban emergency kits. You don’t have to be stuck in the wilderness to need an emergency kit.

The form factor is perfect for apartment living. Consider this list I got from another emergency kit manufacturer:

Includes: Six (6) water pouches (4 oz. each), six (6) 400 calorie food bars (2400 calories total), 10 water purification tablets (each tablet purifies 1 liter of water), AM/FM radio with headphones and batteries, rechargeable squeeze 3 LED flashlight, 5-in-1 survival whistle, box of 50 waterproof matches, emergency survival blanket, emergency poncho with hood protection, N95 respirator dust mask NIOSH-approved, three (3) wet naps, three (3) pocket tissue packs, 37-piece first aid kit, deck of playing cards

A lot of people in NYC and NJ would have appreciated the slim tube during 9/11 and Storm Sandy.

  3. VSSL is reading this :). We’ve got an urban version in our product pipeline … stay tuned. But like Julie said, we intend to maintain a streamlined form factor, so we have to be incredibly conscious of space.
