Or at least that is what the SpreadTHAT! Heated Butter Knife claims to be able to do. The unique thing about this hi-tech kitchen gadget is that it doesn’t use any electricity to warm the knife. It uses a non-toxic titanium coating to conduct the heat from your hand down to the blade, allowing you to cut through and spread cold butter like a … well… hot knife through butter! I’m not sure how well it might work if you happen to be a person who has a warm heart but cold hands. That’s something I’ll find out soon because the folks at UsefulThings.com are going to send me one to review. But if you don’t want to wait for my review, you can head on over to their site and buy the SpreadTHAT! knife for $19.95. And if butter doesn’t excite you, they also have a similar product for scooping ice cream that I’ll be covering too.

  2. I’ll be interested to see your review of the ice cream scoop. I previously tried one that had a heat conducting fluid inside. It worked for about a quarter inch before whatever head I had in my hand was overwhelmed by the cold ice cream.

  3. a graphene knife would be even more efficient :p

what bothers me is… why titanium? it’s 20 times less conductive than copper, wich i assume would be the main material, unless they chose aluminium, wich is cheaper, but only the coating is mentionned….

either way the limit is the amount of energy in your hand, so yeah, ice cream will just be freezing for your palm 😀

  4. I deal with high thermal conductivity materials all the time. I would guess that it is actually an aluminum knife with some kind of TiO2 coating, esp. since they are only charging $19.95. I suppose it would work until your hand got cold.

There are also $19.95 defrosting plates on the market. Those are just plates of aluminum, with 4 rubber feet. Worth about $2 if you make one yourself. I use an old frying pan to do the same thing. Didn’t cost me a penny.
