Having a picnic in the grass, spending the day at the beach, going to a concert in the park, taking a long walk and deciding to sit in the shade and talk before heading home – all these things can involve you sitting in the grass, dirt, or sand.  Sometimes you might not mind getting dirty, but other times you’d like to have a barrier between you and all that nature.  You could carry along a blanket, but those are big and bulky.  With the Matador Pocket Blanket, you can always keep a blanket in your pocket in case a picnic breaks out.  The Matador measures 44″ X 54″, and it’s big enough for four people to sit on or two to lie on.  The Matador Mini is 28″ X 44″, and it’s big enough for two people to sit or one to lie on.  The blankets are made of HyprLyte Nylon that’s puncture resistant; it has weighted corners to keep it in place, and the water-repellant underside keeps moisture, dirt, sand, and insects from getting through.  The blankets fold down to pack in a sleeve that fits in the palm of your hand, and there are folding lines sewn on the blanket to make sure that you can get it back in that small sleeve after you use it.  The Matador Mini is available to order now for $20.  The full-sized Matador is out of stock at the moment, but you can sign up at Matador‘s site to be notified when it’s available.

  2. It’s a little bit pricy for what it is, but the idea is sound.

I’ve used old tent fabric similarly (it folds down nice and small) and if you camp long enough, you are going to end up with a tent ready to trash. Cut it in to a few sheets, sew up the ends and POOF, you have a VERY thin, light somewhat weatherproof tarp. I’ve got a few rolls in my BOB.

I’m tempted to pick up the smaller version to see how it compares to my “home made” version. It certainly folds down smaller that what I’ve done. Packed size can make all the difference in the world.
