The worst thing about travel these days is waiting through the security check line in airports.  What if you could breeze through a special check-in line, keep your shoes and belt on, and not have to empty out your carry-on and laptop?  What if it only cost you $85 for five years of this special treatment?  If you are approved in a TSA Pre✓ security evaluation, you’ll be able to move quickly through a special security line.  To enroll, you’ll have to provide specific identification information and documentation, provide a fingerprint, and pass a background check.  If you are approved, you’ll get a Known Traveller Number that you’ll provide when making travel arrangements, and your boarding pass will have a TSA Pre✓ indicator that allows you and children under 12 traveling with you to pass quickly through security at participating air ports.  Of course, you’ll still be subject to random TSA inspections.  The TSA Pre✓program is now open to everyone, and it could save your hours of time waiting on lines.  Learn more about the program at the TSA Pre✓ website.

  2. Depending on how often and WHERE you travel, if you do any int’l might as well bump up to Global Entry (100$) and get TSA pre thrown in (KTN included).. that will get you faster access at int’l entry to the USA.

But, if one only does domestic, no need. Another note. If you have an AMEX Plat card (and several other credit cards too) they will reimburse the fee for Global Entry.

  3. I have gotten that status for free a few times when checking in on Hawaiian Airlines for inter island travel. Some times I have gone through very quickly. But other times I have been stopped and had to spend 20 minutes or so for the full search because either their computer was doing a random check or those pads they swipe your cases dound something weird. So sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
