Having a spare key available in case you lose yours is a good idea, but not so good if you just “hide” the key under the door mat or in one of those plastic rocks that just scream “key inside!”. I was locked out of my home for the first time a few months ago. It took two hours to get a key from my wife. To avoid this situation occurring again I put a spare key in my car trunk. I keep a tool box in there. I also keep a spare car key in my wallet. So now to be locked out of my home I have to forget my house keys, forget my car keys AND forget my wallet. If all that happens, the Fates themselves want me locked out of my house.
I have a family member with one of these – and no sprinkler system. 🙂 Covered with a little dirt and it looks innocuous in the yard. They got theirs at Lowe’s.
I did this a few years ago. Used a real sprinkler from Lowes.
To increase security you can do what we do: hide a key to your garage (or shed) outside, and then hide a key to the house in the garage. Even if someone finds the hidden key it won’t get them into the house, and there are hundreds of places in a garage where you can hide a house key.

That’s similarto what I do although I am a bit of a security freak so I have a key to a place with a key to a place with the front door key!!
