on February 12, 2014 10:00 am

WaterField Designs has just introduced the Rough Rider Leather Messenger Bag. It’s a gorgeous distressed leather bag that is available in one size: 15″ x 10.5″ x 3.5″ and with a choice of six different accent colors: black, copper, pine, green, flame and pearl. The Rough Rider easily holds a 13 inch laptop and features four additional pockets to hold your gear. There are two waxed canvas pockets on the inside and two soft-lined pockets under the flap that are large enough to hold a small tablet or phone. The Rough Rider Leather Messenger is designed to get better with age. All the scuffs and scratches will just add to its rugged good looks. You can pre-order now, with shipping scheduled to start on February 28. The price for the Rough Rider is $335. More info at WaterField Designs.

thats the look I’ve been waiting for… price is serious though. whoa. anyone know of similar alternates?

  2. 2

@Charlie there are less expensive alternatives, but they probably won’t be made of leather.

I second Charlie’s question. I’ve been looking for something similar to basically carry my tablet xperia z, bluetooth keyboard, and a kindle paperwhite. I’d love to find something just a hair smaller and a fair amount cheaper …

@Doug what is your budget and does it have to be leather?

    Doug says:

    Julie —

I’d say my max budget is $100 and it doesn’t have to be leather. Thank you very much …

P.S. I’ve been reading your blog since way back in the early 2000’s, I think — I’ve always enjoyed your reviews!

@Doug have you considered Timbuk2? Their classic messenger is available in a lot of color combos and is fits your max budget. I love Timbuk2 bags and carry one every day.

Let me know what you think or what you end up buying :)

I carry my work gear (MacBook Pro Retina 13 and iPad with small doodads) in a Tom Bihn Ristretto, which has been an amazing bag for me. I really like the look of this Waterfield bag…it’s much less expensive than a Col. Littleton, Skytop Trading or Saddleback Leather bag…but what really makes me hesitate with this back is the lack of a document pocket in the back of the bag. When I need to take papers home to grade, I need plenty of room. It stretches the imagination just how many folders of papers I can stuff into the back pocket of the Ristretto!!! Always been a fan of Waterfield, though, they make solid stuff.
