I always cringe a little when I’m driving along and see horses and riders sharing the road.  It’s not because I don’t like horses or don’t want to share the road.  It’s because I’m always afraid that something will happen and a horse or rider will be injured or worse because someone in a car somehow doesn’t see them.  Tail Lights were created by Sami Gros after one of her horses was hit by a car, despite the fact she and her friend were riding in an equestrian community and wearing appropriate safety gear.  With these Tail Lights, a current Kickstarter project, you’ll be able to add a bright, flowing set of lights to your horse’s tail.  Tail Lights wrap around the tail with a Velcro wrap, and they are designed to help keep horses and riders safe in any weather or lighting condition.  The batteries last from 15-26 hours (depending on settings), and they are available in sizes to fit any size horse (height-wise, that is).  Early-bird specials are still available, so you can get a red, green, blue, yellow, purple, or white Tail Lights for $160.  For $250, you can get a set that can switch between all the colors at the push of a button, and there’s even a red/blue flashing set for $200 that’s available only to mounted police officers.

Have they added color changing options for when the horse leaves “pavement patties”?

  3. This is just not nice.

Why wrap something around the horse’s tail?

Why not just have the rider put on a vest with appropriate LED lights?

And add LED lights to the rider’s legs as they go down the sides of the horse?

Putting lights on the tail is just mean to the horse, especially since the tail protects the sensitive area of the horse.

The idea is mid-directed. And I hope it does not make its crowd-funding goal.

  4. Sandee, I didn’t think about it being placed in a sensitive area for the horse. You’re right; there must be another way to make the horse and rider more visible without potentially hurting the horse.

  5. What are you talking about hurting the horse? I have 3 different tail wraps for my show horse, and they don’t hurt the horse. The lighting unit looks like it just velcros on top of the tail wrap, so everything that is sensitive is totally protected. I am very familiar with LED technology, and they are cool to the touch and never get hot. I am confused as to how you think this would hurt a horse in any way.

Also, vests are out there, and they are not very effective, or nice looking. I personally think the lights are beautiful, and if I ever come off my horse, I would really like someone to be able to see him if he was bolting home on the road!
