Dremel-4200-1

I’ve always heard great things about the Dremel line of tools.  They are known for their good build quality, and can be used for  cutting, grinding, sanding, shaping, and etching various materials.  I recently had the opportunity to review the Dremel 4200 High-Performance Rotary Tool with EZ Change, so let’s take a look at what is inside the box.

Dremel-4200-8

The Dremel 4200 runs at variable speeds, from 5,000 – 35,000 RPM, with a 1.6A motor and an EZ Change™ system.  It’s very simple to pop on the attachment that you need;  just push down both levers on either side of the Dremel and then insert the bit that you need.  No wrench needed.

It’s also easy to change parts such as the cutoff wheel into the EZ Lock Mandrel attachment.  There is a spring-loaded sleeve in a bowtie shape that you align with the EZ Lock Mandrel.  Once you insert and turn the cutoff wheel, everything locks into place.

Ready to cut!  As always you need to ensure everything is locked securely, for your safety.

And here’s the variable speed dial.

Holding the Dremel was quite comfortable, and I like the fact that it’s easy to use in either hand. (I’m left-handed, so I always have issues when holding tools.) You can use various grips such a “golf” grip, or hold it like a pencil.  It’s pretty overwhelming what you can achieve.  On the Dremel website is a Projects and Community section filled with how-to videos for ideas and various projects.  I really like the new EZ Change™ mechanism that this Dremel features, so you can switch up whatever accessory you need.  Best of all, if you already have Dremel attachments, most are compatible with this new tool.   The Dremel 4200 High-Performance Rotary Tool with EZ Change is available from various online retailers for about $129.00.

  2. I’ve always wanted a Dremel but never had a good enough reason to buy one… However the 4200 would most likely be the one I’d get.
Funny coincidence- the local Home Depot has the 4200 on sale for Father’s Day …. *hint, hint, wink-wink* kids!!!

  3. I purchased this Dremel to replace my original 100 series unit. This unit has a great motor and designed to be easy to switch attatchments on, but 4200 has 3 major issues that you should be aware of.

    1. If your bit jams or cutting blade stops because you do not have the speed set right the unit shuts off. You will have to leave it sitting for awhile before it will start. (I had take the first 4200 back to Home Depot and they exchanged it.)

    2. Issue is that when you are cutting with the Cutting wheels be warrened the EZ Switch locking dose a horrible job locking in the collet. This happened several times and the Drum mandrel flew off the Dremel. 4200 comes with #8 collet which is the smallest size

    3. Using the gutting guide and rotary cutting bit was like using a butter knife to cut a steak. The blade made perfect dill holes but could not cut through the 1/2 drywall.

Buy this unit if you like having the newest tools to look cool, but if you plan on cutting or putting a router edge on something harder then you credit card, then don’t bother .

  4. Greetings,

Anyone know where I can purchase the collets used for this machine? Dremel.com does not have them available. THANKS

  5. I was excited to see the EZ change feature on the 4200 but found that the bits would come flying out when using. I do not recommend the 4200 due to this issue.

  6. This is a very superficial review. You only talk about it’s features and mention nothing about it’s performance. I have also read many reviews that say this product fails almost right out of the box. You should probably at least address this issue.
