Actually, you’re on your own with the powder, but the MatchSafe will keep your emergency supply of matches dry and ready.  This little stainless box, made by Stoll in Germany, is much more durable than a match book and keeps your safety matches dry and ready until you need them.  There’s a piece of sandpaper mounted inside for striking the matches.  Exterior black leather accents have been heat-bound to the metal for a tighter bond than you can get with glue or staples.  It measures 2.6” X 1.76” X 0.6”, so it’s small enough to keep in your pocket or throw in your EDC bag.  It’s $40 from the CooperHewitt Shop.

  2. I agree with Marc. I am still looking for an explanation of the practicality of matches. True story: I found a disposable ligher about 10 years ago on a backpacking trip and put it in my stove pack. Ever since then, while I always have my expensive windproof lighter with me on camping trips, I always ended up using the now 10 year old disposable lighter to light the stove because it’s just there and always work. May be things are different when you are at the top of Everest, but for normal folks, I think a disposable lighter is a much more practical and reliable solution. I could dunk my disposable lighter in a pool of water and it will work after 5 minutes.
