“By golly, Jim… I’m beginning to think I can cure a rainy day!” — Doctor Leonard  “Bones” McCoy (The Devil in the Dark)

Science fiction or science fact? We might have thought that the tricorder from Star Trek was just fiction, however Scanadu is a company that’s working towards making it it a reality. The SCOUT is their first product.  Place it on your temple and within 10 secs read:

  • Pulse transit time
  • Heart rate (pulse rate)
  • Electrical heart activity
  • Temperature
  • Heart rate variability
  • Blood oxygenation (pulse oximetry)

This information is then transmitted via Bluetooth to your smartphone for display and also for storing for historical tracking. The company is working on ways that this information can then be used to self-diagnose your condition (not so good for hypochondriacs 🙂 ).

Indications are that it should be available by the end of 2013.
