Are you feeling guilty about everything you ate yesterday for Thanksgiving? Yeah me too… especially because all I did after dinner was sit around visiting with relatives. I didn’t move much at all, which isn’t good. Pedometers and activity trackers have become more and more popular in the past couple of years because they show us just how lazy we are and motivate us to change bad habits. I’ve reviewed several different fitness gadgets over the years, but the Misfit Shine looks like it’s going to blow all the others out of the water when it becomes available next Spring. The Shine is an Indiegogo project that has already far exceeded its funding goal, so this device will definitely go to market. What’s cool about the Shine is that it’s been carved out of solid aluminum and features a very simple display of LEDs to show you your daily activity progress when you tap it. Another way I think it excels over other devices is that it doesn’t require a cable or dongle in order to sync your activity data. You just place the Shine on your smartphone’s display and it syncs with a special non-Bluetooth/wifi method. You don’t even have to worry about charging it, because it has a replaceable battery that will last for up to 6 months. There’s a 3 day (expires Sunday midnight PST) Black Friday special for $59 which  reserves a Shine, a clasp and a metal gift card. The Shine will ship to you in March, but you’ll receive the gift card in time for the holidays.

  1. Gadgeteer Comment Policy - Please read before commenting
  2. Wireless sync is probably achieved using high frequency sounds. I’ve tried a few products that uses that type of “wireless” technique. Pretty interesting way of syncing in proximity.

  3. I wish my nike+ fuelband was waterproof and able to track my cycling 🙁

Other than that, i’ve gotten into the habit of syncing my band daily.

Although $59 is a nice throwaway gadget price 😉
How does Indigogo work? similar to Kickstarter?

  4. I picked up a new Fitbit One (replaced an Ultra) because the One can do bluetooth sync with my iPhone. Through coupons I managed to pick it up at BestBuy for $65.

The One also has a new vibrate alarm mode to wake you.
