Your readers need to take care buying Buffalo linkstations. Mac’s Lion OS removed support for some network protocols, allegedly because of security concerns. Many NAS devices were affected and most of them came up with firmware updates to fix it (my QNAP server works fine as network storage and time machine). Buffalo gave the finger to its customers and I now have 2TB brick sitting in my office which Buffalo will not upgrade to work with Lion. I can’t access it at all, never mind use it for time machine backups.

Either their products or their support sucks – buyer beware.
