Isn’t this the phone about to be orphaned by the non-compatible Win 8 operating system about to be released?

Yes and no, existing WP devices won’t be offered the WP8 OS but they will be getting a partial update with the WP 7.8 release that’ll bring the same Start Screen features, along with some usability improvements.

While they’ll continue to support existing devices and will continue to come out with app updates and new app releases.

The main thing with WP8 is they’re leveraging compatibility with Windows RT/8 Metro apps and making some features standard like NFC, which was rather random with previous Windows phones.

While the overall plan for WP8 release won’t start for another two months and will take a couple of additional months before they get all the new phones released.

Meanwhile the older phones will continue to be sold as cheaper alternatives and will be primary for emerging market countries as well.

While WP8 itself will still support WP7x apps. So aside from apps that specifically use features not supported in earlier WP versions then you should still be able to use most apps in the WP app Market and that’s still over 100,000 apps.

Nokia has also emphasized its commitment to supporting the existing phones and is already coming out with some updated and newer apps. Like an improved camera app for the Lumia…

It’s mainly those who want to be able to use every app available that may have issues but those who enjoy their phones now will continue to be able to use them for quite some time still. While aside from non-compatible apps the 7.8 update will at least allow existing users to enjoy the same UI.

Just like say someone using a Tegra 2 phone can continue to use it even though they can’t play any games made for Tegra 3 devices.

Basically, not getting the latest OS release isn’t the end of the world and people tend to replace their smart phones every year or two anyway. While some don’t mind limitations for lower investment cost is they just need a more basic phone until a later time.
