magicJack gets an iOS app

Bill’s review of the magicJack Plus have been really popular with our readers. Now iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad owners can make free calls to U.S. and Canadian phone numbers or to any magicJack number, anywhere in the world using WiFi or 3G. The calls won’t use your mobile minutes or require any purchase. It’s completely free. I just tried it myself and it worked great. You can sign up for your own free magicJack phone number through the app, or you can just make a free call either by keying in the number or using the contacts already on your phone. The caller id on the receiving side of the call shows up as an area code 202 number. The magicJack app is free via iTunes. Full press release after the jump.

Free magicJack APP Launches on Apple App Store Providing Free Phone Service

magicJack VocalTec issues new guidance of $2.00 – $3.00 GAAP EPS in 2012 and

20 – 30% revenue growth from 2011 to 2012

West Palm Beach, FL, and Netanya, Israel – September 28, 2011 – magicJack VocalTec, Ltd. (Nasdaq: CALL), the Voice Experts and companythat invented voice over IP (VoIP) that sold over eight million magicJacks®, has officially launched the magicJack APP™, a free application now available for download in Apple App Store(SM) that allows users to make free calls to numbers within the U.S., Canada and to all other magicJack numbers in the world. magicJack APP is compatible with the iPad®, iPhone®, and the iPod touch® (essentially turning it into a free mobile phone), will never use mobile minutes and does not require a voice plan.

magicJack APP is the latest offering from the company which recently launched magicJack PLUS™, an upgraded version of the successful magicJack that continues to provide free phone service with the option to use it with or without a computer. The magicJack PLUS is the only device available in the world that works inthis fashion that also weighs less than one ounce. This small, efficient form factor is achieved by using the company’s proprietary computer on a chip that performs more than 14 functions and contains a CPU and memory.  The newest line-up of products and services continues to deliver the highest voice quality, and now allows the customer flexibility when placing a call: with or without a PC or Mac computer, on a smart phone, on a tablet, without a magicJack and even via an iPod touch providing free telecom service across all of these devices. The addressable market for the company’s products and services is ever expanding and now made available to a much larger demographic market across the globe.

magicJack APP, now available for free, downloads within seconds and allows customers to begin making free calls. Users will have the option to use their existing magicJack number to make/receive calls or use the application for outgoing calls to landline or mobile numbers in the U.S. and Canada, and other magicJack numbers across the world for free. magicJack APP is as easy to use as your mobile phone with bettervoice quality and allows customers to use their stored iPhone contacts.

Dan Borislow, CEO of magicJack, states: “I am incredibly proud of the many employees involved in building our first APP. I am obviously biased in saying this, but I can’t see any reason that by offering the best voice quality, free calls, ease of use, ability to use your existing contacts and free download, that we will not have tens of millions of downloads over the next year. Apple has the best OS and devices built for voice and I believe we have the best telephone network and software engineers to take advantage of this incredible platform.”

Customers with an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad will be able to use the app when connected to W-Fi or 4G with the same functionality of a regular mobile phone with better call quality, but without the costs for calls. Answering the demands for people on the go or people in their home or office, the company’s products and services now broaden to include computers, telephones, smartphones and consumer electronic devices.

The company’s CLEC network is the largest in the U.S. in terms of area codes available and certification in number of states and carries the call totally IP until to the last mile utilizing 140 servers and 83 session border controllers. These servers are only working at five percent of utilization now as the company expects substantial call growth.

magicJack VocalTec expects to deliver other devices and services connected with Wi-Fi and 4G next year. With watching more results of media tests over the weekend, the company is updating estimates for2012 to $2.00 – $3.00 GAAP earnings per share (EPS) before any nonrecurring items and 20 – 30 percent revenue growth from 2011 to 2012. With eight million customers having purchased the magicJack, magicJack VocalTec is currently the fastest growing telecom company in North America. The company continues to have the most aggressive and advanced product and service path of any other company in home, small business and mobile telecom in the country and will soon expand into new markets across the world.

magicJack APP is available for download today at the Apple App Store.

If someone has read this article and dismissed this app, I would suggest they give it a try. The sound quality on 3g (never mind 4g) was far better than on my cell. I’m impressed.

I haven’t had much time to give it a “run”, but for the 3 or 4 calls I made on the “go” — it was great.

I have had more success with this app than the MJ plus. It has worked very well indeed on both wifi and 3G, nothwithstanding the recommendation to use with 4G. Sometimes there is interference on some wirelsss networks. However, I always test the quality by first calling the free test line 909 390 0003 prior to making a call. That way you can hear your voice played back to you and can judge the quality of the call. This really is an amazing product. I have also tried call forwarding my land line to my MJ number instead of my cell phone when away from home and it works. So all the incoming calls directed from my land line are free no matter where I am. No more roaming and long distance charges on my cell phone. Does it get any better than this?

    towhomitmayconcern,
i’m a senior. i am looking to reduce my phone bill and my internet cost(both are with the local phone company). i need simple understanding of today’s communication jargon.
i’ve seen “magicjackplus” on television and have read this review.
not clear on all that’s offered or the required apple products to
have no cost phonecalls. i understand i can use my present phone number. deporting? how do i find a lower cost computer connection/provider? is this something magicjack has? have looked into ‘unlocked’ phones, which i then do not know understand how the plans work. could someone set me straight on these matters?
    respectfully yours,

@Robert for this app, you only need an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and a Wifi connection. You can’t use your existing phone number with this app. You might want to check out the MagicJack hardware for that: http://the-gadgeteer.com/2011/07/22/magicjack-plus-review

This app is great, but one downfall for magicjack customers like me this app is just a trial after that 60day period you have to pay $20 a year and I have 2 iPhones with this app and my regular magicjack on computer so that would be $60 which is NOT going to happen… They have mislead people by not mentioning it under the description of the app! Good thing I checked my account today and found out those 2 apps I downloaded will expire on new years and my main account will expire on Feb 2012 and removed my auto renewal……

Up until the recent upgrade this app was working well on both 3G and wireless with some exceptions for certain wireless networks.
However, with incoming calls on 3G, I am unable to hear the other party although they can hear me. This is frustrating for me since I was hoping to avoid cellular roaming charges by forwarding my land line to this app instead of my cell phone when away from the house. I am not sure that this app is worth $20 per year. I will have to make up my mind before years end when the trial period is over. Very annoying that they advertise this app as being free. I discovered that it was not free when I found it listed as a device in my account with a December renewal date. Very sneaky of them not to be upfront

I am not sure if I have to eat my words in the above post. I just checked my MJ account and my subscription has been extended to June 28 2012. I am not sure if there is any billing to my card yet but I will check. If it is a free app I wonder why they extend it in six monthly increments.

I downloaded TalkFree on iPad 2, using unregistered option. When calling a cell phone from iPad, connection is made but cell user can’t hear me. I can hear him. Happens with both Bell and Rogers cell network phones in Toronto. Is there a fix?

I own Magicjack for local call use in Florida and a MJ + for Canadian locals calls. Why do I have to pay for the iPad app that links to my Florida MJ #. I’m already paying a subscription fee for both MJ’s?
