At Last!!!!!!!!  My cry has been heard!

Not to be outdone by Dunkin Doughnuts, Starbucks is now getting into bed or…waking up…not sure which… with Keurig K Cup.   Dunkin Doughnuts has announced that you can now purchase their coffee blend in the single serve K Cups designed for the Keurig Coffee Brewers. Earlier they launched a catchy ZING-esque advertising campaign : “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Starbucks”

Starbucks is fighting back with their new single serving in a K Cup outfitted for the Keurig coffee makers.  One of which I have.  One of which I have reviewed and find FABULOUS!  (Insert Tim Gunn jokes here)  Green Mountain Coffee Company could be the stock to watch.  Not only do they offer Tully’s (a personal fave) coffee in single serving K Cups, but also a wide variety of other blends such as Newman’s Own, Emeril, Twinings Tea, Celestial Seasonings, the aforementioned Dunkin Doughnuts, Timothys, and Bigelow  teas  as well as Gloria Jean’s and their own Green Mountain coffee blends. Now Starbucks is coming on board with their K Cup which will be offered in Starbucks outlets along with the Keurig coffee makers.  No word what will this do to sales of Sbux’s own Via single serve (read: manure in hot water) offerings.

What’s really odd (or telling) is that I’m reading that 80% of Starbucks brick and mortar customers do not own single serve coffee brewers.  I applaud Starbucks for reaching out in this way.

  2. I’d gladly buy a Keurig. Or a Tassimo. Because I’m lazy.

But it so happens that I visited a few local dumps… full of plastic and aluminum that did not get recycled (and seriously, who is going to peel the aluminum foil off of a cup, empty the used coffee grounds and recycle the cup?)
Then the machines stay plugged in for the most part of the day (if not the entire day at all) just for me to brew a cup once or twice or whenever. Useless waste of electricity.
Instant coffee pod machine – 1. Nature – 0. And I kind of did not want to be part of this game.

  3. Wow. Way to cast aspersions. I happen to be one of those people who peel back the foil to recycle the coffee grounds because my garden thrives on it. And I recycle the foil and the plastic.

Yes, keeping the machine plugged in could be considered a useless waste of electricity but it hardly registers on the Richter Scale when you think how much electricity places like Las Vegas waste during the day including water.

Recycling my little K Cup won’t make a blip and neither will unplugging my machine but thanks for taking this news blurb somewhere else. 🙂

  4. I read Starbucks could connect with Kerug until they split with Kraft on distribution.
We have several big office sized Kerug’s with water lines to them and a drawer for the used K-Cups. The cafeteria gets the k cups for the whole building. I wonder if we’ll be getting the Starbucks k cups soon?

  5. Go to Italy. Have a cappuccino for breakfast (never, at any other time). Have a coffee (espresso) after lunch. Maybe try a latte macchiato late afternoon as you sit watching the passeggiata (if you ask for a latte they’ll give you milk). Go home, go to Starbucks. Wonder what it is that you’re drinking and spit it on the floor. Find a proper Italian bar in your town. Be happy.

  6. @andix: A reusable filter for your Keurig is like $15. Just saying. I think it was one of the very first purchases I made for my Keurig machine.

As for the wasted electricity, you can always unplug your Keurig, or replace your outlet with a switched outlet. But it’s a hypocritical argument to make, unless you’ve done that for nearly every electronic device in your house. After all, the only thing that’s on when the Keurig is idle is the clock on top – the heating elements are all off when idle.

  7. Really? Seriously? How did this news bit spiral into a debate about the environment? I thought Starbucks, being the green, liberal, hippy company, would never do anything to harm the environment. Insert sarcasm here.

  8. I have a Tassimo and had used Starbucks regularly until they ditched them to move to Keurig and supplies ran out. It was very flavorful coffee. Tassimo is claiming that they are going to get some bold flavor replacement (every other current brand they carry pretty much sucks) but I’m not too hopeful. I’ll likely swap out for a Keurig once Starbucks is available. I am a regular pot of coffee guy in the mornings, but there are times when just one cup is very convenient.
