eton raptorThrow the Eton Raptor in your gear when you go camping or hiking and you’ll be able to do everything from guiding your way with a compass, to listening to NOAA weather broadcasts, even to charging your cell phone.  The Raptor Solar Charger with All-Terrain Guidance Functions replaces the hand crank with a monocrystal solar panel with charge indicator.  Guidance functions include an altimeter, barometer, and compass.  In addition to the NOAA weather band radio, the Raptor has an AM/FM receiver with 10 preset stations for each.  It has a chronograph and a digital alarm clock, and it has an audio input so it can act as an external speaker.  It’s 2.875″ W x 8″ H x 1¼” D and weighs only 11.3 ounces.  It has an 1800mAh rechargeable battery that powers all its functions, and it can also be used to charge a cell phone.  Heck, it even has a bottle opener.  The Raptor is available in black, orange, and green.  It sells for $150 at Eton.

  2. Wonderful device, but the lack of a hand crank is a bummer. You almost always have the ability to run the hand crank, but sun is fickle sometimes. The UI is not very intuitive and the antenna is flimsy.

Other than that, it is IPx4 certified, meaning it can handle some splashes and other such water events in stride, but you need to know it is not waterproof nor could you leave it out in the rain and expect anything other than a broken device.

For $150, you should get full water resistance (submergable for a short period of time) and a backup charging option.
