  2. Well…this is timely. I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on Ooma but was a little put off on the $200+ pricetag but figured I could recoup the cost in a few months from what I pay Vonage.
I don’t use my house phone a lot but I like having it, plus I like that this seems to be fax machine friendly (some people still like to receive faxes, what can you do) So I signed up for this and hope that it will work as advertised.

  3. The main differences I can see between netTALK and MagicJack is that netTALK you can connect directly to a router, where MagicJack you need your computer running. MagicJack is cheaper per year, though.
I use Google Voice; I just type in the number I want to call and where I want to receive it (cell phone or landline) then my phone rings, I pick it up and hear it ring on the other end, the party I called picks it up, and we start talking, and for free;-)

I think Google Voice has them all topped!

  4. Bob, you still need phone carrier like ATT, Vonage, or NetTalk to use Google Voice. Google doesn’t provide carrier service.

  5. @Mark
    Actually you don’t!
I place a call at Google Voice, and it calls my landline phone. It rings, I pick it up, I hear it ring on the other end, the person I called picks up and we talk!
    Try it:)

  6. @Bob, what Mark is saying is that your “landline” has to be from a carrier, be it ATT or whomever. So you do need a phone carrier to have a landline to be able to use Google Voice.
It seems netTalk has an advantage since you don’t need to have your computer on. It’s a little more expensive but for now it might be worth it compared to MagicJack.

  8. That’s exactly what I was saying, Carl. I used Google Voice back when they were Grand Central. Google bought out Grand Central and transferred in all their accounts, mine being one of them. You can’t get a call to your landline phone from Google unless you already have a carrier like Vonage, ATT, or NetTalk.
