Songsmith from Microsoft Research

Microsoft Research says “everyone has a song inside”, and their Songsmith program helps you create it.  Songsmith will create backing music for a singer’s voice – just choose a style and a tempo.  You can also play an instrument instead of singing.  You’ll need a PC running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, and a microphone.  After your song is created, you can change the style, the instruments, even re-record the vocals.  You can share your completed song with other Songsmith users, or you can export it to WMA or WAV files to share with others.  You can download a trial version that works for six hours of actual use (not six hours of time from download completion).  Songsmith is $29.95 in the US.  People in the UK or EU can purchase it from the United Kingdom Microsoft store for £25.
