At $18.99, Starmap Pro is much more expensive than most iPhone apps, but amateur astonomers of all levels will find it very useful.   There is data for 2.5 million stars, multiple star catalogs, multiple deep sky objects catalogs, and data for the solar system.  The “tonight” view shows an ordered list for objects that are best placed for viewing on a given night, and that list can even be sorted to show the order they’ll rise in the night sky, by objects best seen with the naked eye, with binoculars, or with a telescope.   It can display in full color or in red only to protect your night vision.  It works with both iPod touch or iPhone, but it does make use of the iPhone’s GPS to further tailor your night sky view.  Starmap Pro is available through iTunes.

  2. Nice one. I’ve been using another iPhone App similar to this, it’s called pUniverse which works well. I believe it was about $5 or so in the iTunes store…

  3. This looks like the program Stellarium for desk and laptops. It is a good program, but free in those formats. This looks way overpriced.

  4. Unfortunately Wolfman when you engage the warp drive and emerge at the other end of the galaxy all the constellations will look different anyway – you need something like the Hitchhiker’s Guide instead.

  5. My favorite iPhone app. Good value.

If you’re not an amature astronomer, you will see this as over-priced, so get a cheap app like distant suns, goskywatch, starmap 3D or Starwalk and enjoy their limited uses.

Starmap Pro is worth every penny. I especially like the equipment section where I can program in multiple eyepieces, Barlows, telescopes, and finders; then not only see how they compare & which ones to match-up in the field, but see how that specific set-up will look when viewing a conjuction, or practice star-hopping to find an elusive DSO.

This App does NOT leave me wanting more like the 10+ other astro-apps I’ve bought or tried (though Starwalk does look cool – like a coffee table book).
