i guess one way to handle the security vs practicality issue would be to have some kind of smaller external pocket(s) that could hold toys, tissues, bottles, umbrella and similar low value but high practicality items for easy access.

another consideration could be smaller pouches/bags that could go on the straps for these kinds of items. and with the bigger setups, maybe a waist strap with similar options.

hmm, maybe a way to attach the anything bite to the shoulder straps, so that it covers the wearers chest, with quick release snaps or something when taking the pack off.

btw, the security argument somewhat falls flat ones one go for one of the messenger bag like setups, like the letterbox, "tall shorty" or "just the two of us".

Thanks for the information, Matt - I didn't consider the tradeoffs needed for making the SHeLL a day pack. I also didn't consider the security aspect of having the straps cover the zippers.

Beefing up the padding of the straps and providing a clip to keep them from wandering off your shoulders would address the major comfort/use issues I had, and should make the system even better then it already is.

Matt Deegan here from KAMILIUN

First off thank you for your in-depth review of one of our first bags, I appreciate the amount of time spent testing the bag.

If possible I would like to answer some of the points raised in the review and hopefully offer some insight as to why we chose to construct the bag in such a way.

Our "bag in bites ideology" as we like to call it currently consists of four bags that can be combined together to make up various different packs to suit different needs. The pack we sent combined two of those bags: tHe SHeLL and LEttERbOX and created tHe cHicKeN oR tHe eGG.

tHe SHeLL is designed as a day pack that can roll down and be stored in as little space as possible. Due to the way tHe SHeLL is designed to support the other bags the straps needed to be as strong as possible. For the strength issue and the fold-up capabilities of the SHeLL we opted for EVA foam, the strongest and most durable foam we could find. Other types of foam were too soft and meant the other bags didn’t sit properly.

Saying that we too have found the pack uncomfortable on long journeys due to the lack of padding. We are now redesigning the straps to include a fully padded underside to make the bag as comfortable as possible. Included in that is a clip to pull the straps together so they don’t feel like they are falling off the users shoulders.

The reason the zipper on tHe SHeLL is on the inside is for security purposes. In my personal experience I don’t enjoy walking in a crowded area with a pack having easily accessible pockets. We fully understand that some people don’t have the same issue and as an answer to that we will be designing a pack with a zipper on the outside in the not so distant future.

We know everyone is individual and has different needs. Our philosophy is to create individual packs for individual people. There is always room for improvement and we welcome any comments or suggestions into ways to improve our products or expand our range...

Thanks

I've had a lot of backpacks, and never one where the strap attachment point was over the zipper(s). Sure the dual bag design means that the back bag's zippers must be covered, but the front bag's could have been uncovered. I guess if you travel alone it doesn't matter at all, since you'll take the pack off to get anything in or out anyway. Since there are no external pockets, that's always the case here.

it would seem the issue is mostly with the shell part, as it covers over most of the other parts.

makes sense from a engineering standpoint, as a fully loaded setup would still carry most of the weight on the permanently attached straps, rather then on the zippers.
