Update: I mailed this drive to a friend, and while I could not kill it, the Post Office sure did! I apparently did not package it enough- but then I am not used to packing 15lb items!

It apprently got dropped on a corner from some height, and some of the jacks got jammed up. He did not feel safe plugging it in so I don't know if it still works. When i visit him over the summer, we'll give it another try!

I think the product sounds like a great item. Having had similarly sized external hard drives fail several times , it’s great to see a manufacturer who understands that product longevity is important in backup products. If you can’t get it back after a problem, what’s the point of local backup storage!

I looked at one of these several months ago, and finally decided it was just overkill for my modest home backup needs. So very tempting, if only for the ultra-cool factor, and after exchanging emails with the guys at IoSafe I wouldn't think twice about their ability to help if recovery was ever required. Great review!

@Julie- I did wash the case and so forth, but I was not quite comfy with the idea of eating whatever tough material the case is coated with, and they set rather soft- lots of uncooked areas.

Now, if it woulda been bacon!

Mark, dude, this is an awesome review!!! You really went all out! And the product sounds like a great item. Having had similarly sized external hard drives fail several times (not to mention names, but their initials are Western Digital and LaCie), it's great to see a manufacturer who understands that product longevity is important in backup products. If you can't get it back after a problem, what's the point of local backup storage! And the free phone support for the first year is a great touch.
