ive owned a total bithead for many years... currently running it with akg 701s. for any audiophile out there looking for a bit of extra oomph for your buck out of an archived music collection coupled with a bithead, try out the combination of foobar2000 music player, this plugin http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_ks which bypasses any filtering done by windows, feeding the output directly to the bithead (http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_wasapi is a better option for win7/vista) ... for equalization that will satisfy even the most hardcore audio snob, there is a plugin called the convolver which allows you to apply a frequency response tailored to your specific headphone of choice. (i will not post that link as it is for experienced users ONLY ... i.e. if you listen to creed and kanye exclusively please do not attempt)

I have had a Total AirHead for 5 years and it does make a difference for portable devices. The audio drivers on ipods and other devices are just not powerful enough to provide the full range. Something to do with saving battery life.

I've been learning more about better quality audio recently and this sounds like something I should own. Love the dual listening option. Great review, very comprehensive. Thanks!

Whoops! I meant that I have considered the 600 ohm 880's, not the 770's. I'm not a big fan of closed cans.

Cyberg00se,
Certainly you're going to get more bass with the 990's and while I've considered the 600 ohm 770's, I have stuck with the 350's because I haven't found a portable amp that I can afford that can drive the 600 ohm versions to volume levels that I like. I have a cMoy that can push pretty hard, but that's not ideal. I'm LOOKING at the micro line from Headroom, I just have to save up that $600 :)

Jon,
There is indeed value but one real danger. Make sure you're running off batteries and are NOT using a car lighter -> usb power adapter to power it while you have it plugged into your stereo. This can cause damage all around. That said, Putting this in between your ipod and your stereo can have fantastic results!

I wonder if anybody knows whether there would be any value in using this device in a car when running an iPod through the AUX input of a stereo system, even in the case where there is a high end audio system?

I have a larger component headphone setup. And the TBH powers the same stuff. Ok, maybe not JUST as well, but pretty darn spiffily. If your headphones are sounding harsh directly out of your laptop, then get the TBH and never look back.

And I think the TBH is going to be better than that Victor thing that was linked to. It's built by headphone enthusiasts for headphone enthusiasts, and they are really pioneers in the field. They're the ones who have, through the years, made better headphone audio popular.

But dude, you know that you should be using an ipod dock adapter/line out mini cable to hook up any headphone amp to your ipod. The line out is going to be MUCH better than plugging into the headphone-out. Yeesh! DT880s, powered by a portable amp (hopefully with the high gain on), going directly to the ipod's headphone out. Harsh highs like that would give me a headache, but I prefer the 600ohm version of the dt990s.

I've always known there was better audio quality out there, but not being much of an audiophile or techy, I wasn't sure what I was looking at or what to look for, or if it would really be worth it for me. I also always assumed I would have to get some big stereo receiver or whatever that would sit in my living room. This answers a lot of questions and has got me looking and thinking in a different direction. Typical Gadgeteer review: thorough without losing me in the details. Thanks!
