metaldetecting-sandalsI used to be into metal detecting aka TH’ing (treasure hunting) a bazillion years ago. I still have two detectors around here somewhere. I couldn’t help but do a double take when I saw these metal detecting sandals from Hammacher Schlemmer that come in sizes for men and women. The right sandal has a built in coil and a control box that straps to your calf. When you walk over something metal, an LED will flash and the box will buzz or vibrate. For $60 bucks, you can slap these polyurethane flip flops on your feets and go find yourself some gold doubloons.  Yo ho ho!

  2. Oh this is deadly. On my wish list when I was a kid (above the hoverboard from Back to the Future II) was always a metal detector. Must…resist…though I do need a new pair of flip flops…….

BTW, if anyone asks what the box is, you can regain your street cred by saying “Yo baby, this is cuz I’m on house arrest, but no one can keep me from hitting the beach”. Or just wear pants.

  3. A real metal detector is not necessarily “sophisticated” nor high tech. Some are, but the basic concept is fairly simple. In fact, many traffic lights rely on them for sensing presence/movement of traffic at intersections. I suppose the ones that discriminate between various types of metals could be called “sophisticated” and “high tech”, but really, even those are only sophisticated and ht with respect to their instrument readouts and human interfaces. But you’re right, the shoes are more of a novelty, much like the metal detector apps for ipads and android devices.
