I’ve never been camping in my life (I don’t like bugs, so sue me…). But that doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate cool camping gear like the Light My Fire MealKit. This kit includes 2 plates, spill-free cup, combination spoon and fork (aka spork), small waterproof box and colander/cutting board. It’s available in 4 colors and can be purchased for $19.95 from REI.com. I think I need a set for my own brand of camping, which is lunch in my cube at work 🙂

  2. Looks great, assuming you go camping with a microwave oven in your backpack. The original Boy Scout aluminum Clamshell messkit is still for sale at less than half the price, and it’s suitable for real camping.

  3. Looks like there’s a serrated knife blade on fork side, too. OUCH! Why didn’t they just put a knife on one end and a spork on the other??

  4. Design: I give it an A- the stuff is attractive and you WANT to use it.

Functionality: I give them about a D+/C-. I’ve used the kit and think the mug is ridiculously small/shallow, there is not really a benefit to the triangular shape- it has a lot less useful area than a circle, oval, or square would have and still takes up about as much packing room. My spork broke first use out.

FYI: When we camp or picnic, we use Rubbermaid shallow storage bowls with lids- bowl as a bowl, lid as a plate. My favorite bowl is a longish oval that is divided internally. The nice thing here is it holds heat better than aluminum.

  5. uh, i see an advantage weight wise – but u cant use it over a fire, so you have to carry additional gear to cook with?!?!

  6. I have the spoon+fork thingie, which can be purchased separately. I bought it coz I go travelling alot ( maybe once or twice a month) and sometimes, its handy to have a spoon or fork. The serrated blade is actually quite dull, so it’s useless. I would have preferred they left it out, and just made a regular fork.

But I’m glad they did not combine the fork+spoon into a spork. Try eating noodles or spaghetti with a spork, and you’ll know why after wiping the hot gravy from your eye caused by strands of noodles slipping from the shallow tines of the spork and splashing back into the gravy.
