I'd rather purchase Computrace (LoJack) if I was that concerned about my laptop. The first time they log onto the Internet with it, they can trace it and actually recover it.

We had a laptop stolen last year and the detective involved actually had them send a message to the thief who was surfing the net on the stolen PC while they were standing outside his apartment. It said "Please open the door...it's the police".

Seems a bit iffy to me. The thief has to leave the device power-up, with the AT&T 3G device intact for this method to work. Even then, the hard disk is still intact if not encrypted and I'd bet decent money that it isn't impossible to flash the non-protected BIOS over this new one with the correct equipment. In general, it only works in a limited set of circumstances, that only get smaller as criminals become aware of them.
