Last night I was chatting with gadgeteer team member Dave Rees and he told me that he and his son (the Gadgeteer Kid) were in the process of building light sabers at the online Custom Light Saber Shop. I had never heard of such a thing, so I went and took a look and wow, there’s some hard core geeky goodness going on there! I told Dave that he MUST review these light sabers once he and his son have a chance to play with them. I’m not sure I convinced him though, so help me out and let him know that you also want to see more about these geek toys. 🙂

  2. Please bring on the geeky (cool) toy reviews. The light sabre program for the iPhone tweaked my interest; if only it had light to go along with the sound.

  3. They have this exact product at Disneyland at the shop just outside the Star Tours ride. It is a wall of bins with illustrations on the wall that describe what to use and how to assemble them. I built two of them using every different part available. The crystals they provide offer different sound options when they are inserted, and there are also different colored filters to insert that will allow you to change the color of the beam. They have a telescoping plastic tube beam that is very durable, and the sounds are pretty cool when two of them impact one another. They provided batteries at the cashier and showed that they were working perfectly. My kids really enjoyed them, I thought they were a little too plastic for my taste…and the price. Still kinda cool though!

  4. Jeff,

I believe we’re talking different sabers here. The hilts of the lightsabers I am ordering are made of a thick, polished metal and precision machined to fit together. The electronics within are a much higher grade than the typical plastic lightsaber. A 3 or 5 watt LED is used to light the blade of the saber. The blade (aka battle blade) is made of an ultra strong 1/8″ thick polycarbonate engineered to ‘do battle’. My hope is that what we receive is many times better than the typical plastic lightsaber you find @ ToysRUs and even better than the FX lightsabers.

    Dave
