I have this same bag for about 11 years now and love it. The Back Country Express (office) is by far my go to bag, I carry it literally everyday and still looks great. I give it a wash if gets too trashed and always comes out looking good. My only complaint is that the u-wires that give it shape sometimes pop out of thier channels and poke through the bag. A little rubber tape and that problem goes away real fast. Hands down the best bag I've ever owned.

Hi Jeff,
I think there were 2 or 3 different models of the Back Country Office - I've got one sitting here next to me that has to be 12+ years old (and its still in great shape!) the one I've got the front pouch isn't fully separate like the one pictured above, rather the top side of it is joined to the rest of the bag.
Anyway, I'd agree that this is one of the best bags I've ever seen - its been around the world and doesn't show it, and even works great as a carry-on.

tks 4 taking time 4 the writeup - am looking at the Day or the Tour, and your info convinced me to go with the Tour (just need to carry di-hydrogen oxide, small alky stove w/Ti pot/mug and other sundries) - btw, one thing *no* review states is the length of the waist-belt! being a Clydesdale, it can be disheartening to find a nice product but only Euro-sized...

Hey! New comment!
The bag above is the Back Country Office (BCO), which is bigger than the Day. Oheerwise, they are pretty similar. If you like one, you'll like the other. I know because my BCO just got stolen and I got a recycled Day to replace it.

so are your pictures pictures of the mountainsmith day or the mountainsmith backcountry office? I'm confused. They are similar packs but actually have major differences and are different sizes the day is 854 cu in and i think the backcountry is 1275 cu in.

thanks,

Don't worry: the compression straps snug everything down very well. I would put the laptop in a sleeve if I were anxious about scratches from other gear. The main compartment is divided and has a neoprene backpad for hard edges. My 13-inch Macbook fits fine.

I like the look and practical aspect, but how well does it pair as a laptop and gear bag? If my Macbook is moving loosely in the bag, isn't enough to discourage me from buying it?
