Stick the end of the tool in the opening just to the front of that with the bump on the tool towards the back of the opening. It should catch on the lip of the batter cover and then you can pull it open (so it basically "hinges" on the back side of the cover). You can just push it shut again with your fingers after replacing the batteries.
