Actually, I didn't mention this in the review, but this package comes with the all the stuff you'd get if you bought the M-Audio Keystation 49e by itself. That includes the Ableton Live Lite 5. It is even packaged in the M-Audio box, which is then shoved into the Piano Wizard box. Really the only thing different that you get with this package is the Piano Wizard CD and quick start guide.

The M-Audio keyboard should work as a plug-and-play MIDI device with Windows. I poked around the web and found a few possibilities for free or cheap recording software for windows:

http://buzzmachines.com/ - a free software synth with sequencing

http://www.anvilstudio.com/ - free demo, $19 to buy, records audio too

http://www.flstudio.com/ - Fruity Loops, the lite/beginner version is only $49 but they have versions going up to full pro level of functionality. Leo Laporte recommended this one on his XM radio show when someone asked "where can i get music composition software if i only have a MIDI keyboard that didn't come with any" :)

Another thing of note is that if you're thinking of buying this package, you can get the Piano Wizard software by itself and buy a separately packaged keyboard, and if you do that the keyboards usually come with recording/synth software. (For example the Keystation 49e if bought separately comes with either M-Audio Session for Windows or Ableton Live Lite for Windows and Mac depending on where you buy it.)
