It’s after 9pm and I’ve only just started packing for my vacation to Sedona, Arizona. I leave for the airport in less than 10hrs. EEP! Of course the most important part of my packing is my tech gear ;o) I’ll be gone for a whole week, but I don’t want to over pack. So here are the items I’m definitely bringing with me…

Oakley gear bag

Various CF card for camera
Brando 55 in 1 Card Reader

Buffalo 4gb USB stick with some TV episodes on it to watch if there’s nothing on TV at night
Bright Strike 80 Lumen LED flashlight
Waterfield wallet
Eye drops

A couple of metal binder clips
A stack of magazines for the plane trips back and forth

When I go on my storm-chasing expedition in four weeks, I will be taking:

    Roadwired Photo/Video Convertible Bag

Sony TRV-22 DV camcorder with 3 DV tapes
Sanyo Xacti C6 with 2 spare SD cards and spare battery
Canon SD700IS with 1 spare SD card
Palm Treo 700p with retractable USB cable
    OQO 02 with spare battery
Garmin GPS 60Cs with USB cable
    Nintendo DS Lite
    iPod nano 4 GB
    Earbuds

    USB SD card reader

I will be getting my new 237D from SEV on Tuesday, that should be going with me as well.

    Enjoy your trip, Julie.

  3. We’re here… I’m completely beat! Up at 5am. 1hr flight at 9:30am, followed by a 3hr flight, followed by a 2hr drive. It’s now 10:40pm ‘home’ time and we just got back from eating dinner. Darn place we’re staying at has crummy WiFi. We were told it would be in the room, but it doesn’t extend that far. So I have to bring my Macbook Pro up to the patio area outside the main office. The weather here is wonderful though, so I guess I shouldn’t complain :o)

    I think I need sleep! :o)

  4. What on earth are you doing in Sedona this time of year? You only THINK it’s nice weather because the sun is down. Wait until tomorrow; it will be at least 90 degrees with EXTREME UV index. May I suggest Maui Jim sunglasses, Neutrogena non-greasy SPF 40 suntan lotion, a straw hat and one of those soaker thingies to wrap around your neck. Have fun. Keep Cool!

  5. B.J.:
We’re not in Phoenix, we’re North about 2hrs. It’s much cooler here. Not sure what the high was, but it was wonderful today. Sitting outside on a patio under an umbrella right now and it’s probably 75-80 degrees. :o)

We just did shopping today (I didn’t buy anything tho). Tomorrow we take a Jeep tour for some good photo ops. Tuesday we’re going to do some hiking. Wednesday morning (EARLY) we’re taking a balloon tour. Love it here :o)

  6. I’m packing tonight for 6 days in and around Ft. Lauderdale, FL and will have enough gear to need a pack mule. Since I’m an underwater photographer, I tend to pack HEAVY. I’m not even diving on this trip and will have no dive gear other than a bathing suit, yet will still be packing my Canon Digital Rebel XTi body, a few lenses, underwater strobe system, a couple of 4GB compact flash cards, 12″ G4 PowerBook, Canon SD600 point ‘n shoot camera, Treo 680, and of course my DS Lite and a bunch of games. Oh, and all the chargers I’ll need! Whew. And on the way back, I’ll also have the camera housing (Seatool) I’m going to pick up (it’s only sold in 2 places in the US and I want them to make sure it all works before I take it into the drink…). I’m going to try and get most of it into my Crumpler Karachi Outpost bag. And when I get back next week, I have an appointment with my chiropractor!

  7. So did you wind up using all the gear you took or was there something you determined you could have left behind?

I’ve actually forced myself to carry less gadgets (yeah, I know, take my gadget fan badge away) by buying a smaller gear bag for my camera stuff. I picked up a nice canvas Domke F-3X which will carry my 30D, 17-40L, 50mm f/1.4, a 580EX Speedlite, B&W Circular Polarizer, Gepe holding several CF and SD cards, Canon SD800, chargers, spare batteries and Epson P-3000 (no laptop on this trip). I was able to the extra lenses because of the smaller bag. The 30D will be used for morning and night scenic shots in Jamaica. The SD800 will be the daily carry-around for snapshots and to stay inconspicuous. The Domke is great because it doesn’t scream expensive camera gear.

  8. Leo:

I actually used everything I brought with me except: the Inka Pen, Buffalo 4gb USB stick, and
Bright Strike 80 Lumen LED flashlight. And there wasn’t anything I wish I would have brought along that I didn’t. It worked out great :o)

The only thing is that I wish I had smaller laptop. I love my Macbook Pro, but it’s not exactly feather light. Sometimes I wish I would have bought a 13″ Macbook instead due to the smaller size / weight.

Jamaica huh? When are you going? I’ve never been but would sure like to some day. Have a great trip!
