Unlocked 680 Palm Treo. Changing from T-Mobile sim to AT&T sim. T-Mobile sim worked just fine. When I put in AT&T sim, it said "sim card not found". Do I need to reset the Palm Treo in order for it to recognize the new sim card?

Fernando:
The OS (Palm, Windows Mobile, Symbian) in a phone is not dependent on the SIM. You can put a SIM card in any unlocked GSM phone and use that phone provided that the phone has a band with coverage in your area. If both of your phones are branded with the AT&T logo, that tells me that they are probably locked to AT&T. Is your SIM also AT&T? If so, your new phone should work just fine unless it's defective. Do you have another SIM to try in your new phone?

No...The treo 680 is not locked and the treo 750 is not locked and they are both AT&T. But of course the 680 is palm based and the 750 is windows based. As soon as I put the sim card in the 750. It says ..no sim card . So I was thinking that they were not compatable. what are your thoughts?

Fernando:
Is the Treo 750 locked to a specific carrier? If you bought an AT&T 750 and don't have an AT&T SIM card, you'll be unable to use the phone unless you can get it unlocked.

I have a 680 but I just bought a 750 on Craigs list. My question is whether My sim car from my 680 will work in the 750? I tried putting the sim car in and it says.. no sim card found. Is that because the 750 is windows based?

A very nice smartphone. You can even use Bluetooth (or USB) thru your computer or a bluetooth access point to access the internet for synchronising, web browsing, or IMing - not just $$ Edge.

Kevin:

Thank you for your comments. You sound like me, constantly trying new phones. I've been using the 680 again yesterday it began annoying me by spontaneously rebooting. It's very annoying when you need to make a call and hit the Send button only to have the phone blink off and then reboot. GRRRRRR...

I agree that the Treo is a great phone, but when I can't rely on it, I get the urge to switch again. But to what....? Hmmmmm....

I guess back to the HTC Excalibur... which I have another set of issues with.

Hi, From Sunny Spain. just wanted to say that Julie has done an amazing job on the palm 680 absoulutly brilliant, we don't get so much input from european users!. I have had an unlocked 650 which I found to be great after downloading the patch to increase the earphone volume which when in a busy street with traffic passing by it was difficult to hear the other person. It worked well with the Parrot hands free in the car. I sold it about 3 months ago since then I have had a HP 6915 with windows "YUK" and then a Qtek 9000 the size of a brick and I know have a Sony Ericsson P990i which is a very good phone in deed but I still feel the urge to get my hands on a 680 although as Julie says it is very much like the 650 but without the antena. I have had 20 phones in all and still find Palm one of the best on the market. There is one on ebay in the UK unlocked for 170 euros so I think i am going to have to go for it:blink: Great Forum. Great views and Julie you have done a great job. Adios amigos

Glennjh:

I haven't been using the 680 much the last few weeks because I'm switching phones every few days to write mini-reviews. The apps I use most on the 680 are the built in PIM apps, Dates!, 2Day and a few games here and there.

I'm pretty sure it's not an issue to sync with Outlook on my Mac using Parallels, but I don't use Outlook, so I haven't actually tried it. I don't have any problems getting my notes to the 680 using MissingSync. The problem is getting notes to Windows Mobile (and other) devices.

Regarding Backup Man vs. Resco Backup. I can't answer that one as I have only used Backup Man. Maybe someone else can offer some insight.

I'm just following up on how you like the 680? Many questions to boot of course.
What apps do you use the most on it? What do you miss most from Windows Mobile and multitasking?
Can you synch Outlook via Windows VM on your Mac? I was thinking you might get your Outlook notes to the Treo that way.
Failing that; I once exported all of my notes to a file and used Card Export to carry on my palm to transport to a work computer to reference.
Last question: is Backup Man vs Resco Backup. Have you compared their relative values?

Blessings

excellent review julie. i recently update(or downgraded) my treo 700p to a 680. i just love the form factor of the 680 and i wanted to move away from verizon's cdma to gsm network, so i can use my treo in asia. the only problem i've encountered is the battery life. it drains like crazy(even with the camera patch)! on a full charge the battery meter drops to 92-95% for some odd reason. but i still love my 680 even though i have to charge it every night, which is really no big deal.

Great review as usual, Julie. I liked seeing the pics, especially those comparison ones on the various Treos because I think they are quite important. The squarish or angular keys of the newer Treos do make quite a difference in texting, something I discovered when I was playing with the 700wx and 700p. I also think that the 650 should have been what the 680 is because the extra RAM does make a difference to eliminate the DBCache resets issues. Can't wait until I get my chance to try it out. (I'm patiently waiting...)

Glad to hear you're back into the Palm fold. ;)

I'm with Cingular, so as long as I have my SIM card, I can put it in any GSM phone (with the 850mhz band) and use it. No special activation needed. That's the joy of GSM. :)

Julie, Does your cell co. let you activate devices from any ol' source or only the ones they sell? Mine is the latter so choices are really limited.

Hellenek:

The extra memory is nice, but not really a huge advantage for me. I install 95% of my 3rd party apps on a memory card since it makes it easier to switch between devices.

How long would 680 last as a book reader? (with radio off).</blockquote>

I read ebooks alot on the 680 and it does last a looong time. I haven't timed it but I'd comfortably use it for a 7hour flight - with the mandatory extra battery of course.

Julie, did the extra memory make it worth the upgrade from the 650? I find that it's made it much more stable and makes it more of a pleasure to use.
