This pen is worthless, and worse than the fact that it will not work, is the fact that the 800# support redirects you to online queries, and then hangs up!

When I called the sales department the man was rude and refused to offer any options.

We are returning this product to the store.

Hi Ron,

This is not the irispen 6. If you look at the picture of the box it is a very old edition of the pen. I have been searching google and have seen a lot of reviews of this pen, such as http://www.irispenscanner.com , most of them are good reviews, saying the pen does exactly what is advertised. I can see how this old generation of pen would have some flaws. The best thing you can do is read up as much as you can about what the express 6 does and decided from there. Remember it takes some getting used to, like learning to hold it at the right angle etc. And if it is still not doing what you expect then you should send it back definitely.

The pen proved in my case to be a complete disaster. It neverw worked, during calibration I got the message ‘not connecte” and a pop-up appeared with the message debug bulkhead reader. I complained several times however I never got a reply from the factor in Belgium, however they acknowleged the receipt of my complaint. I would be very careful with this product and company.

I take short handwritten notes when I read. Will the pen scan them accurately? Do you have suggestions? I’ve looked at tablets but most options are for PCs and I’m a Mac User.

Great evaluation. Almost as good as trying the thing out for myself. The report being dated 2005, can you tell me if this was the IRISPen Express 6 ? Wondering if they improved their product since this report.

I have a question re: the IRISpen Executive Asian.

Does it have any competitors that scan Japanese and translate into English? If anyone knows of any, if you can tell me, that will be a great help, thank you! The IRISpen Executive Asian is expensive, and from reviews, apparently causes some of the frustrations mentioned in this review. However, I live and work in Japan, and am learning Japanese, but am only beginning. Every day I receive many papers on my desk, in Japanese. So, a translating scanner might be so helpful that I am considering buying the Irispen Executive Asian, even with its high price and frustrations. Before I buy it, I would like to know if there are any other scanners available anywhere that scan Japanese characters and translate them into English, to make a choice of which scanner to purchase. So far, I have not been able to find any; some translate English into Japanese, but no others I can find translate Japanese into English. Thanks for your help!

Hi Judie

this is a great review. Comprehensively tackles the key issue of how effective these pens are at character recognition in practice. I wanted to use the pen to scan transaction details from receipts (name, amount, date etc).

However, as others have said, I will refrain from buying one of these pens based on the less than 99% reliability of the scans. But could it just be that the IRIS Pen Express is not as good as other pen scanners (e.g. c-pen, Wizcom)? What is your opinion about that? My guess would be they all have a similar level of performance but I’d like to know what you think.

Hi Julie. I was about to order the IRISPen but I read your review and … I did not. I am a poor typist and I am looking for a scanner to put into Word quotes from books I am reading in which I have the unfortunate habit to underline paragraphs, sentences or words that I may want to use as quotes at a later date. Sometimes I am just marking the paragraph in the margin though, which is probably a more practical way to do it for scanning. Do you have a suggestion for a usable scanner? I looked at a Cannon available for $50 on Amzon.com and also at Plustek Optiblock 3600 which at $250 would have to “walk on water” to merrit its price. Any help that you can, would, dedain or agree to give me? Thanks, Robert

Not trying to make fun of anyone as your reviews on products are some of the best I have read…
I have to admit however, that what was supposed to be scanned and what was scanned was the funniest post I have read in quite sometime! The product recognizes 55 languages and it seems as if some of those 55 appeared in the scan.. I could not help laughing as I have had the same problems with Calligrapher for Pocket PC…. I finally would end up just trying to print the letters and even that was to no avail…

My best buddy Dave was into racquetball. His D had a little handle on it.
My J is swept back, as a good aircraft leading edge should be (I am in the Aerospace business).
I knew a guy who was very family oriented. He initialed his work with a big C surrounding his first initials. His last name was Carbajal.

People seem put certain of their interests into their signatures.

That French scan isn’t flawless: the accents are messed up. (Missing on the ‘E’, wrong on the ‘i’. Sorry, I don’t know how to type them under OS/2…)
