Personally, I'd say backpacks, messenger bags, and satchels which can be used to hold books, paper, and laptops are pretty 'manly', at least IMO. Something with at least one compartment large enough to hold a notebook, and wider than it is tall, if it's not a backpack or similarly 'beefy' bag - I can see where fnj got the 'manpurse' idea from, as my sister had a similar 'purse' herself, albeit one slightly smaller than that.

fnj:

What bags do you think are appropriate for guys to carry? I actually had someone email me last week asking if we'd do an article on which bags are good for guys.

I know I've got some sort of fixation with this and that it says more about me than the bag at hand. :o

That said, I think the thing that strikes me is the shape. I've seen quite a few of these bags that are taller than they are wide and I can't wrap my head around the idea. Don't get me wrong...they're beautifully constructed and, no doubt, very useful. They just don't work for me. Color, buy the way, has nothing to do with it, although I prefer basic black.

Manpurse trivia: Soon after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia suffered hyper-inflation and the ruble was nearly worthless. People would have to pay for a cup of coffee with a brick of notes. The Russian fashion industry responded by creating this ghastly accordion-style leather manpurse to hold all of of this worthless money. To this day, you see really macho Russian men with rediculous, dainty purses. I've searched for a picture, but haven't had any luck with GIS. Perhaps this can be my niche on the web.:D

fnj:

You think the Timbuk2 is a manpurse? Really? What makes a bag a manpurse? Color? Shape?

Sorry, but it's a manpurse (not that there's anything wrong with that!)
