trice:

Yikes! As a Windows user turned Mac user, I've accidently unplugged many a USB flash drive, USB hard drive, and memory card without first 'ejecting' it. I've not run into a problem corruption <knock wood on> yet. I'm not sure what the solution would be...

Review included section starting "strange passage in the user guide that warns against sharing the drive between a Windows PC and a Mac".
I have a Seagate 100 gb external drive usb fullsize, and have it 3/4 full of data from a winxp system. Just got a Mac mini and before I thought about it hooked it up to the mac and it recognized the volume and label and displayed the included folders and files.
I stupidly turned the drive off without ejecting it from the finder window. Next time I powered up the system it claimed the drive was unreadable and needed formatting. I took the seagate over to the winxp system and got the same response that the drive was unformatted.
Now I need to find software solution to recover files off the seagate or restore directory structure. I have used Hard Disk Mechanic in the past but they claim not to work on usb external drives. Lost & Found I have also used but Symantec has done away with that along with Powerquest.
I figure I could take the drive out of the case and hook it up with ide cable and use HDM Deluxe or Gold which I have, but wanted to save that as last resort.
Any suggestions anyone?
thanks a bunch,
trice.

I didn't notice the two different sizes...probably explains the price difference.

bquin:
I'm guessing that your 4gb drive has been formated using NTFS. If so, that's why Mac can't read it. Macs can read FAT32 formatted drives just fine. Just like this Seagate...

dmccarty:
Do you have a link to the drive? All the 1 Touch drives I see for Maxtor are large desktop drives, not pocket sized drives like the one reviewed.

FWIW, I just saw the Maxtor 100GB/7,200RPM "1-touch backup" version of this thing on Dell this morning for about $130. At double the cost of the Maxtor, with worse on-paper specs, this Seagate drive doesn't look like a very good deal.

I've read somewhere that the mac can read a PC formatted drive but not vice versa. Is this true? I have a 4gb PC formatted drive but I can't get my mac g4 powerbook) to read it.

the seagate drive looks great but I want to be certain I can read it on both my PC and powerbook.

thanks...
