It works quite well too. I mucked around with it a few months ago using a graphics tablet, and it was good. Would be perfect for a tablet pc. And its free :D

Yep. Mine looks exactly like that. There are some instructions in the U-series Yahoo group about how to activate it since it is not turned on by default.

You may also want to check out the U-series FAQ as it contains some really useful information. You can find it here http://www.greyhat.com/sonyu/

Its easy. Even my Word 2003 on my normal laptop can bring it up:

http://img210.echo.cx/img210/2137/writingword20031lp.jpg

Shows how to get to it.

Vidge,

Tell me more about the handwriting recognition built into MS Office. What version? So do you have a Word doc open where you write your text and then you cut and paste into your browser window?

I've been using the US version of this unit (U750P) since December and I absolutely love it. (Only difference is the hard drive - only 20 meg - and I have XP Professional) find the unit to be extremely well thought out & I rarely use the keyboard, preferring instead to use the handwriting recognition built into Microsoft Office. (I'm actually using it right now.) I have a full-sized Sony laptop that I rarely even use anymore & I haven't touched my PDAs for months.

This unit isn't for everybody but it has been virtually perfect for me. About the only downside is Sony's service, which I find less than stellar.

Julie, from what I can see in the picture, the backspace key seems to be missing from its usual spot. Is that true?

See, that's what I was trying to explain ;) It's an extra key farther to the right or so... I'll put in another picture tonight.

I myself just did a review for this device for my Company. Even though its a cool product, the screen form factor was a negative for us. It did everything advertised however, but getting an additional bluetooth keyboard to work was very tricky. Finally, we could not justify the expense of the device, lack of direct support in the US, and the screen form factor (for our needs). The OQO is a direct competitor with a built in keyboard.

Julie, thanks for mentioning the "Rex". In trying to find a case for [my] Rex, I stumbled upon The Gadgeteer (1997?). T-G has become a permanent fixture in all of my bookmark folders since.

When I bought my Rex I remember thinking "just how advanced 'man' had become". Imagine, [cramming] 512k of data into a device that small...wow! I have moved on (Treo 650 + Shadowmite ROM's + 1gb SD) and the ride has been fun.

Keep up the good work.

MitchellO:

I meant just what I said ;) This is a Japanese keyboard. The characters printed on the keyboard do not necessarily match up with an English keyboard. The location of some of the keys like Backspace and the ' and " keys are a key or two 'off' from what I am used to. I'll have to get a picture to better explain it.

Lord Bodak:

I agree. I do know of one person that has installed the tablet OS on the Vaio:

Great review, I managed to pick up the U71P while Sony were selling them in the US. (At a Sony Style retail store no less).

Just a couple of points: (call me nitpicky if you like)

The network connection (on either the dock or the external monitor dongle) is a Gigabit (1000) connection.

The LED's on the right, are not LED's it's a grill for the speaker (I think they did it for the look of it).

I second that this is a great little machine for real portability. You can improve on the battery life by turning the brightness down by about 1/3rd, turning the sound off and the wireless off (when you don't need it, you can even do this with the handy switch on the side without having to reboot) and you easily get 3+ hours out of the standard battery.

Cheers

What exactly did you mean in the review about:

the keyboard still has Asian characters and extra keys on it. The only problems I had were with the backspace and quotes keys.

Great review though. Some nice pics!
