Heck, for $19.95, you can get the 'Boom Boom Multi-Box' from Walgreens in several colors.

Very similar in function to the Pioneer, but no external controls of any kind and the overall sound quality is about what you'd expect from an under $20 set of waterproof speakers (tinny, distorted at volume, etc.)

I've been using the Boom Boom Box now for several months. Picnics, gym, poolside, even IN the pool. It works well for my needs.

This thing looks sort of like a bug-eyed plastic lunchbox, and is made from the tough, springy plastics that toys are often made of. It closes with a big tough latch on top and two lesser tabs on the sides.

Inside, it has a small, seperate amp that uses 4 AAA batteries and has its own on/off. There is a Velcroed elastic strap to retain your MP3 player or CD player, and a 'well' and sleeves for CDs to be carried safely.

It includes a funky clip/hook to hang it in the shower, etc.

In use, I find it handy and totally waterproof. It is a bit annoying to have to adjust volume on both the player and box, AND on/off in both places (easy to forget something and run down the batteries). The size of the Boom Boom box lets me carry other stuff inside- spare batteries, lotion, googles, etc. Handy!

Now- as a tinkerer, I've modified mine. I've rigged up an external headphone jack so I can swim and wear cheap headphones while towing this and listening to my tunes in peace and privacy- better sound quality as well. (Inside, I left the 1/8" stereo plug so I can plug into the amp OR the MP3 unit directly). I've also rigged up internal spare battery storage.

Problems: besides the tinny sounds and no external controls, the only problem i have had is that one time, when I dropped it, the internal amps mount broke and I had to Velcro the thing in place.

Hmmm - it is listed as ABS on the Audio Cubes website. All of the manual is in Japanese and so is most of the writing on the item itself. I honestly don't know what to tell you. :(

I wish this was available last summer as the cheese speaker setup I made with my MP3 player got soaked at our local lake beach. Odd that you should mention the band Keane. That was what I was listening to when I went to the gadgeteer web site and read your review. Hopes and Fears is my favorite of their CD’s. I really like their piano/Tom Chaplin vocals, with a Gin and Tonic. :D
