since the remote for the hmp is just a cheap one without LCD, can others with LCD be used?</blockquote>

I'll see what I can do about getting that device to review. As for remotes, it's hard to say if other remotes would be compatible with this player. The only other LCD remote that I have is for the DMC 800 that I reviewed some time back:

The connector looks similar but has too many pins when compared to the remote that the Sony shipped with.

Aequitas:

At least with the Archos, you get quite a few 'power user' features. The Sony just doesn't have enough umph to it for my liking. The best thing it has going for it is the great display.

I'll see if I can't get my hands on the latest Archos soon :)

Last year I bought an Archos AV320 personal video player and I love it!!! It has a 20 gig hard drive, but you could buy one with a 40 or 80 gig drive if you wanted. Some people bought the 20 gig version and then changed the hard drive on their own to a larger size to save money. Apparently it isn't that hard to do. I'm pretty sure it used the 2.5" laptop hard drives and if I'm not mistaken you can get up to a 100 gig drive now.

The screen size 3.8" which all right. Not only does it play videos, music, and pictures, but it also came with Digital Video Recorder that you attach to it. Basically you have a portable TiVo. I don't know about the new AV400 series but the AV300 series didn't have any copy protection mechanisms so you could record straight from your DVD, VCR, TV, etc. As with the Sony HMP-A1 it does not have an external speaker but it can be hooked up to a set of portable speakers or your stereo system. You can only view JPEG (except progressives) or BMP photos on the machine but of course it acts as an external hard drive so you can store other formats on it. It also has a built in microphone to record notes and messages or you plug in an external mic if you so choose. You can also record directly into MP3 format from an audio source.

They claim to have 10 hours of music playback or 3.5 hours of video playback when using the LCD screen as opposed to watching the video on your TV. I've never had the need to listen to 10 hours of music in one sitting so I can't tell you if that is true or not. As for watching video, I can get 3-4 hours at a time. To play videos on it they have to be in MPEG-4 format with MP3 audio. It does come with a program to convert your video files into the format needed. The time it takes to convert it is the same as the length as the movie. It is kind of bulky and heavy though:112 x 82 x 31 mm (4.4" x 3.2" x 1.2"). 350g (12.5 oz) There are accessories that you could buy, such as the: FM Tuner/Recorder, CF reader, SM reader, and there is a video/still camera attachment. If you bought the AV300 and the video/still camera attachment you then have 3 devices in one. I don't see this attachment on their website anymore but I'm sure you could find it some where. Though what I just said is for the AV300 series the AV400 series is basically the same but with a few differences, such as its weight and some playback formats. For the people who want a storage device for their digital camera the AV400 has a built in CF reader. You can also buy the 4-in-1 SD, MMC, Smart Media, Memory Stick adaptor to transfer your images as well.

I think that the AV400 series is a product that alot of the members here might be interested in buying. Julie, you should try to get your hands on one to review ;)

You are right - you get what you pay for. I just bought a Toshiba portable DVD player for about half that cost. Usability is about half of the Sony MHP - it doesn't have much flexibility in MP3 playback and it has half the battery life. Portable DVD players have their uses and PVPs have theirs.
