I bought a "like new" Tungsten C on Ebay for a total of $187.00 Who the heck is willing to pay the full retail price? Forget trying to win a bid and "buy it now". It's an awesome PDA! I recommend the Zen Touch as well.

The Tungsten C is great. I recommend it highly. Buy it on Ebay. I bought mine for a total of $187.00 by clicking on "buy it now". It's in perfect condition and looks brand new. I definitely recommend Ebay. The reviewer who said the wifi range is 20 feet is wrong, unless someone in my co-op building has a router that is 20 feet from the recliner in my living room :-) Thanks for the 24-hour internet access! The Tungsten C automatically finds a signal and connects. The keyboard is great. I don't know why anyone would want a PDA without a keyboard.

Keep smiling,

I am looking at getting this model of palm. I really like the fact it has wifi and a built in keyboard.. however.. how is the web sofware? I would like to browser any website.. is this possible or is it more like on a cell phone that only gives sites that has a protocol for PDAs? I understand I might not get flash or active X, but I would like it to have HTML and be able to surf the web.

Thanks

I want a PDA that will allow me to do this over wi-fi:

FTP
Web-based email
SSH
Downloads (Office docs)
AIM

is this possible? Will the Tungsten|C meet these needs?

In follow-up to my questions of last weekend, I stumbled upon my own
answer. The passwords we use to control access to the base station are
converted to a "network equivalent" by some magic process. The Base
Station will not recognize passwords longer than 5 characters (mine was 6).
After changing to 5 characters and opening the Admin Utility, I found under
the base station pull down menu, the network equivalent conversion and
programmed THAT series of characters into the WEP portion of the WiFi
set-up. Finally everything worked out and I am surfing.

I liked your review, but I have to admit reading it after my purchase!

This is my first PDA and I was impressed about how easy it is to configure - moistly. I integrated it into my home wireless LAN easily and today into my local free coffee shop LAN.

I have a couple of questions, though, are there some sites, other than Palm, that offer add on hardware and soft ware? I have two interests - I'd like to be able to connect to a wired LAN and I may want to get a GPS addon.

Now, I have yet to look through this site so I'll do that now.

So i have a very dated Palm Vx, with a dying power button and far to much databas info for the slow processor on that thing to keep up and have been considering an upgrade for a while now. The biggest thing that's kept me from ditching the Vx is the case i have it in. It's a wallet. A real wallet, meaning i have my credit cards AND my cash in it. It opens like a wallet, it feels like a wallet and it doesn't take a whole lot of time to negotiate out of my pocket (that one might be unavoidable...)... SO. Anyone seen any good WALLETs for the Tungsten C? I don't have a particular desire to muck up the device with velcro so going with something universal doesn't really appeal to me. Any suggestions?

Gardner,

i am so sorry - I must have missed it when you asked that question. I suspect you already know the answer, as Scott R pointed out - you would have to use the stylus (or your finger, or the d-pad in some instances) to change fields in certain applications.

This nails on the head one of the (many) reasons why a built-in keyboard isn't the deciding feature for me with any PDA.

Perhaps there is a software solution, or one of our readers knows a work-around.

Gardner, I'd like to know more about this as well. I suspect that the answer is that you'll still need to use the stylus more often than you'd like to. I own a Treo 300 and can move from field to field in my address book using the up/down buttons on the front of the device. I'd be surprised if you couldn't do the same thing with the Tungsten C using the D-Pad. However, on my Treo 300 I can't change a person's category (e.g. - family, friends, etc.) without tapping on the screen, nor can I select on-screen buttons, though there are some hacks that work (but not perfectly) for the latter. Again, I suspect the same is true for the Tungsten C.

Handspring apparently put a lot of effort into better integrating the D-Pad on the Treo 600 into the OS so that you can do much more without needing the stylus. It's not beyond the realm of possibility (though I'd bet against it) that palmOne could integrate some of this into a flash update for the Tungsten C. If nothing else, I believe PalmSource has said that they plan to make Handspring's OS mods a part of the next version of the Palm OS, so future thumbboard-equipped Palm devices should be much more usable.

Gardner, I’d like to know more about this as well. I suspect that the answer is that you’ll still need to use the stylus more often than you’d like to. I own a Treo 300 and can move from field to field in my address book using the up/down buttons on the front of the device. I’d be surprised if you couldn’t do the same thing with the Tungsten C using the D-Pad. However, on my Treo 300 I can’t change a person’s category (e.g. – family, friends, etc.) without tapping on the screen, nor can I select on-screen buttons, though there are some hacks that work (but not perfectly) for the latter. Again, I suspect the same is true for the Tungsten C.

Hi,

I posted this question back in May, 2003, but I never got a reply.

Your review (or any other) does not mention how much of the Tungsten C functionality can be accessed from the keyboard. Obviously, you can type, but can you select applictions? can you go from field to field? How much do you still need to use the stylus. This is a fairly important usability factor, since if I still need to pull out the stylus to enter a new address book entry (for example), the it doesn't really help that much to have a built in keyboard.

Thanks,

How do you get such great screen shots of the Palm?

I am familiar with Bitbank Software's Virtual CE - is there an equivalent Palm app?

Something that allows you to view and capture your Palm screen over a wireless or cradle link on your desktop/laptop screen....

Control of the Palm touchpad with the laptop mouse cursor would be great too....

Hi,

You mentioned in your review that the Tungsten T and Tungsten C both had a 1500mAh battery. The T-C may have a 1500mAh battery, but the T-T only has a 900mAh one.

I would get this Palm to replace my Axim (which I am very displeased with), but I use my PDA as a MP3 player, so I would be unhappy with the headphone jack (non-standard 2.5mm Mono). It would also be better with a 320x480 screen (ie. like Sony NR70VG)

Otherwise, the best PDA I have ever seen.

I bought another C whilst waiting for the refund on the one I had with a dead pixel. This new one has a perfect screen and is just lovely. No creaking. No buttons activating on their own. I'm very pleased.
